Portraits by Frédéric Huijbregts

Frédéric Huijbregts was a Dutch photographer who lived and worked in Paris. He collaborated on projects with Sebastião Salgado, Willy Ronis and Philippe Sollers. Born in Suresnes in 1956, he died in 2012.

Here are some of my favourites of his portraits.

Françoise Sagan by Frédéric Huijbregts, 1987

Desmond Morris; a fabulous portrait of the author of The Naked Ape by Frédéric Huijbregts.

Bernard-Henri Lévy by
Frédéric Huijbregts, 1987.

Karl Lagerfeld by Frédéric Huijbregts, 1985.

Charles Dutoit by Frédéric Huijbregts.

Kate Barry by Frédéric Huijbregts, 1987.

In 2011 Frédéric Huijbregts had an exhibition of Serge Gainsbourg portraits at Sotheby's. This is my favourite.

A day in the life of Pierre Boulez

Today is Pierre Boulez's birthday. I came across a cache of superb photographs of the great composer and conductor by Roger Pic, from Baden-Baden in 1971, and I'll share the best of them here. These are from Europeana, the great cultural repository of the European Union.

Pierre Boulez would have been quite low down on my list of composers who use a quill pen.

What's Boulez working on? He began work on Eclat - Multiples for 25 Instruments in 1970, publishing various versions over the years, but never finished it to his own satisfaction. This was included in the great Sony set of Complete Works in 1982.

Portraits by Diane Arbus

These are all really special photographs. They have the special Diane Arbus touch; you won't mistake them for Yousuf Karsh!

Jorge Luis Borges in Central Park, 1969

Jane Jacobs by Diane Arbus, New York, 1965. She's with her son Ned.

James Brown at home in curlers, Queens. An undated portrait by Diane Arbus.

Thomas Hoving by Diane Arbus, 1967. Hoving was Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1967 to 1977. I recently read Michael Gross's book Rogues' Gallery: The Secret Story of the Lust, Lies, Greed, and Betrayals That Made the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and I think Arbus has really captured this particular rogue.

Agnes Martin by Diane Arbus, 1966

Erik Bruhn and Rudolf Nureyev by Diane Arbus, 1963

Senator Eugene McCarthy by Diane Arbus. This was taken on election night, 1968.

Marcel Duchamp with his wife Alexina Sattler at home, 1965

Susan Sontag and her son David by Diane Arbus, 1965

Mae West by Diane Arbus, Santa Monica, 1965

Norman Mailer at home in Brooklyn, 1963. Mailer was referring to Diane Arbus's portraits in particular, when he said, "Giving a camera to Diane Arbus is like a giving a hand grenade to a baby."

Diane Arbus, Self-portrait, pregnant, 1945. She was pregnant with her daughter Doon, who was born April 3, 1945.
