Portraits by Gisèle Freund, part 2

Here's the second part of my post on Gisèle Freund's portrait photographs. Part 1 is here.

An absolutely splendid portrait of Leonard Woolf by Gisèle Freund. This was taken at Monk's House in Sussex in 1946. Following Virginia's death in 1941, Leonard continued to live at Monk's House until his own death in 1969.

Marguerite Duras by Gisèle Freund, 1973.

Jorge Amado by Gisèle Freund, 1972.

Jacques Lacan by Gisèle Freund, Paris, 1975.

Martin Buber by Gisèle Freund, Paris, 1958

Jacques Prévert and Ida Chagall by Gisèle Freund, Saint Paul de Vence, 1954. What a lovely shot!

Iris Murdoch by Gisèle Freund, Oxford, 1959.

Adolfo Bioy Casares by Gisèle Freund, Buenos Aires, 1942.

Candido Portinari by Gisèle Freund, 1947. The painting is "Menino Chorando", from 1945.

Robert Lowell by Gisèle Freund, Paris, 1964.

Marguerite Yourcenar by Gisèle Freund, Paris, 1971.

Julio Cortazar by Gisèle Freund, 1966.

Vladimir and Vera Nabokov, with Heinrich-Maria Ledig-Rowohlt, Paris, 1960.

Adrienne Monnier by Gisèle Freund, 1939. In the late 1930s Monnier and Freund were for a time lovers, and Freund remained close with Monnier and her literary partner Sylvia Beach until she had to flee Paris ahead of the German occupation.

Roberto Matta by Gisèle Freund, 1987.

It's looking like I'll need at least one more post of Gisèle Freund portraits. Stay tuned!
